João Pedro, another 14-year-old boy killed by the Police in Rio A 14-year-old boy was killed during a Federal Police operation in Complexo do Salgueiro, in the city of São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro. After being shot, João Pedro Mattos was reported missing, and his family learned his whereabouts the following morning, as his death was confirmed. ⠀ The local homicide unit said it is already investigating the case and that two police officers were questioned and had their weapons collected. The operation comprised a search and seizure warrant against leaders of an organized crime gang. ⠀ On social media, people asked about João Pedro’s whereabouts, recalling the killings of other young people in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. ⠀ According to the São Paulo Public Safety Institute, deaths caused by officers on duty increased 174% in the last four years in Brazil.
