During the pandemic, Brazilians rediscovered the joy of reading

Stuck indoors, with parks, bars, and restaurants closed, the height of the Covid-19 pandemic offered some moments of introspection for Brazilians. While subscriptions of TV and movie streaming platforms saw significant increases, offering an entertaining way for citizens to whittle away their free time, more wholesome pastimes have seen a resurgence, as is the example of reading.

That was the case for 26-year-old Lucas, an actor living in São Paulo. While reading had already been among his hobbies, it has never held such an important place in his daily routine as it does now. “I used to read during my commute, on the subway or bus, but it was less often. And when I got home I couldn’t read for much longer as it was late and I’d be tired,” he explains.

Staying at home during the pandemic, Lucas began seeing his isolation period as something positive. “I was locked up with my books and ended up reading a lot more. Consequently, I ended up buying a lot more books than I had planned.”
