Brazilian movies to watch on Netflix during the holidays

2019 was an important year for Brazilian movies. In spite of government budget cuts and the end of sponsorship deals from state-owned companies that directly affected cultural incentives, the country’s filmmakers produced some remarkable results. 

In May, Brazil conquered two unprecedented victories at the Cannes Film Festival: “Bacurau,” the feature directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dorneles, received the jury prize and was lauded as one of the most remarkable Brazilian movies in recent years. Meanwhile, “The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão,” by Karim Aïnouz, was chosen as the best movie of the “Un Certain Regard” exhibition and was also chosen to represent Brazil for the 2020 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
