The Covid-19 pandemic has devastated Latin America: as of mid-July, more than 39 million coronavirus cases have been confirmed, with over 1.3 million deaths caused by the virus since March 2020. 

But the problem goes well beyond a health crisis: more than 26 million people have lost their jobs (with an unemployment rate of 10.6 percent, the highest over the past decade) and 22 million people fell into poverty in 2020, reaching a total of 209 million below the poverty line, according to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
