Brazil, EU agree on Covid vaccination certificates

The European Commission approved the equivalency of Brazil’s Covid vaccination certificates on Thursday, meaning they will be eligible for use within the EU.

“Covid vaccination certificates issued by the Federative Republic of Brazil in accordance with the ‘Rede Nacional de Dados em Saúde’ system shall, for the purpose of facilitating the right of free movement within the Union, be considered as equivalent to those issued in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2021/953,” says the decision.

Brazil’s vaccination program includes four different brands of immunizer: Sinovac’s CoronaVac, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Of these, only CoronaVac has not yet been approved by the European Medicines Agency.

The new decision means holders of a coronavirus vaccination certificate issued by Brazil’s Health Ministry will be able to use them for all the same purposes as the EU’s Covid digital certificates.

According to Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, this will facilitate “the flow of people between Brazil and the 27 countries of the bloc, should travel restrictions be reintroduced.”

Last month, the Brazilian government waived Covid vaccine mandates for international travelers. Border authorities now accept a negative Covid test taken up to a day before boarding if a tourist cannot provide proof of vaccination.
