According to recent data from São Paulo health authorities, there are at least eight confirmed infections of the Delta coronavirus variant in Brazil’s biggest city. Municipal health secretary Edson Aparecido says the latest figures are proof of the community transmission of the highly contagious Covid-19 mutation.
Though the cases reported in São Paulo so far are not severe, there is considerable nationwide concern regarding the Delta variant: as of July 18, the Brazilian Health Ministry has confirmed 97 Delta cases in seven different states.
Mr. Aparecido said around 600 Covid-19 test samples are sent to three different scientific laboratories every month to monitor the presence of different coronavirus variants. The city’s health official encourages vaccination, saying that more than 70 percent of São Paulo’s eligible population has received at least one shot already.
