An Uruguayan Air Force helicopter transporting Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines to the department of Rocha suffered a mechanical failure and crashed on Thursday morning, authorities confirmed.
The official number of vaccines spoiled in the crash has yet to be confirmed, and the three crew members suffered only minor injuries and are not at risk of death.
The government sent an “immediate operation” with more vaccines to the departments of Rocha and Chuy. On Wednesday night, an extra package of 50,000 Pfizer doses reached Uruguay, as part of a deal to receive 450,000 jabs in 2021.
The 3.5-million-people country plans to vaccinate 70 percent of its population in 2021 and, as of Thursday, it has vaccinated more than 413,000 people.
