São Paulo Mayor Bruno Covas said today that a Covid-19 patient on the waiting list for an intensive care bed in Brazil’s biggest city has died. The patient was awaiting treatment in a hospital in the lower-income eastern zone of São Paulo. São Paulo’s ICU occupancy rates are currently at 88 percent and nearly 400 people are waiting for a spot in intensive care.
Mr. Covas told cable news station GloboNews that his administration should announce new restrictive measures later today. “It brings no joy to close down commerce, parks, or restricting people’s right to come and go. It is a necessity we have to prevent beds from being 100 percent occupied, so we can treat all patients,” he said.
