Governor João Doria of São Paulo said he will announce additional restrictive measures this afternoon to contain the rapid spread of the coronavirus. On Monday, the state entered its so-called “emergency phase,” with the tightest restrictions ever implemented since the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic last year.
“São Paulo will adopt new measures based on what our coronavirus committee decides,” said Mr. Doria. “We don’t take political measures,” he added, in a dig at President Jair Bolsonaro — who has turned the pandemic into a culture war more than any other Brazilian political actor.
Authorities in São Paulo agree that current isolation rules have not been enough to keep citizens at home. State geolocalization data saw an isolation rate of just 43 percent on Monday. Meanwhile, the state broke its record for daily deaths yesterday, and 89 percent of intensive care beds are currently occupied. Newspaper Folha de S.Paulo reported health officials’ forecasts that all ICU beds could be filled by Thursday.
