The São Paulo football championship is set to stop due to Covid-19 spike
The 2021 São Paulo state football championship is reportedly about to be postponed due to the increase of Covid-19 cases and deaths in the state, according to news radio station CBN. Governor João Doria is set to announce the measure on Wednesday.
The tournament was interrupted in March of last year and returned four months later. There is no indication as to when the competition will resume, if at all. Brazil’s football calendar is jam-packed as it is: the delayed 2020 season finished on Sunday, and this year’s Brazilian championship is scheduled to begin at the end of May.
Intensive care units in São Paulo have reached an occupancy rate of 80 percent.
As of March 9, Acre, Paraná, and Santa Catarina states have canceled their local tournaments.
In a statement released this afternoon, the São Paulo football federation said it was against suspending the competition, claiming that it has put “all health protocols into practice” since the sport returned.
