Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou said on Monday that he expects the arrival of a shipment of 192,000 Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine doses by Thursday. As of today, the nation of 3.5 million people is the only South American country yet to have received vaccines. Uruguay’s immunization campaign is set to start on March 1, targeting health workers, teachers, law enforcement, and members of the Armed Forces.
After the first batch, Uruguay will receive another 1.5 million doses from Sinovac by March 15. Pfizer also agreed to send 460,000 vaccines between March 8 and April 26. The expectation is to vaccinate “around 30,000 people per day,” in order to reach 2 million inoculations by the end of March.
Uruguay has recorded 53,310 coronavirus cases and 583 deaths as of February 23. Despite a peak of cases during the holiday period, the country has been among the region’s best performers during the Covid-19 pandemic.
