Bolsonaro could face criminal charges for chloroquine endorsement

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Rosa Weber forwarded charges to the Federal Prosecution Service against President Jair Bolsonaro for touting antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine as treatments for Covid-19

No scientific evidence corroborates the drug’s efficacy against the coronavirus — and studies found that hydroxychloroquine could be dangerous for patients with high blood pressure and heart conditions.

Prosecutor General Augusto Aras will recommend whether the president should be indicted for his endorsement of hydroxychloroquine.

The charges, presented by the center-left Democratic Labor Party, accuse Mr. Bolsonaro of “putting Brazilians at risk” by suggesting unproven treatments to control the pandemic. It mentions an order to produce 3.2 million boxes of chloroquine and the launch of a controversial online diagnostic platform that recommended the use of hydroxychloroquine regardless of patients’ symptoms.
