Amazon variant detected in Rio de Janeiro

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation confirmed on February 16 that the coronavirus variant first identified in the Amazon region has been found in Rio de Janeiro. The institution doesn’t confirm any case of community transmission of that variant in Rio.

This new, more transmissible variant has been found in ten states, according to the Health Ministry. In São Paulo, 25 infections by the new variant were confirmed — 16 of which in patients who were infected locally

So far, Brazil has confirmed 9.8 million coronavirus infections and 240,000 deaths.
