Spain will ban direct flights from Brazil and South Africa as of Wednesday, in an attempt to stop the spread of new and more transmissible variants of the coronavirus. Exceptions will be in place for Spanish citizens and permanent residents.
The country is currently undergoing a third wave of infections, with 900,000 confirmed cases in January 2021 alone. According to newspaper El País, “the Health Ministry calculates that it is detecting nearly 80 percent of infections, while at the start of the pandemic it was only recording one in every 10.”
According to data from the International Air Transport Association (Iata), over 30 countries have restricted or flat out banned direct flights from Brazil after a new variant first spotted in the Amazon region caused a second health collapse in the city of Manaus.
