São Paulo: Covid-19 infections increase among under 30s

According to São Paulo health authorities, the Covid-19 infection rate among the under 30s is increasing. In June, this age group made up 20 percent of overall cases — that share increased to 27 percent by September and is set to increase further during the holiday period.

Indeed, mortality rates among under 30s remain low, corresponding to roughly 2 percent of deaths in the state of São Paulo.

Under 30s a nationwide concern

The increase of cases among young people has also been seen in the city of Belo Horizonte, with the local administration announcing the restriction of alcohol consumption in bars and restaurants. 

With cases increasing nationwide — the 321 deaths in the past 24 hours took Brazil to the highest moving average of daily deaths since October — more cities are expected to adopt measures to curb the spread of the virus.
