Data from the Imperial College London shows that the Covid-19 infection rate has once again risen in Brazil, after five weeks under control. The country’s so-called R rate reached 1.01 — meaning that every 100 infected patients will infect 101 new ones, who would then infect another 102, and so on.
For a spread to be controlled, that rate must remain consistently below 1.
The data comes as the latest update from the Health Ministry shows a 9.3-percent bump in new daily cases in the week of October 18 to 24.
According to official figures, infections are increasing in 16 of 27 states. The number of nationwide deaths, however, saw a 7.2-percent decrease. On November 2, Brazil reached a total of 160,074 casualties, the second-highest in the world. The lethality of the disease in Brazil is 2.9 percent.
