Brazil’s House of Representatives approved a bill that would make the wearing of protective face masks mandatory in public places nationwide until the end of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In its current form, the proposal foresees a BRL 300 (USD 52) fine for anyone caught without a mask. However, in municipalities and states where local authorities do not provide the free distribution of masks, the fine would be waived.
The bill now moves on to the Senate for approval, before requiring the signature of President Jair Bolsonaro to be ratified as law.
