Nelson Teich issues statement — but doesn’t explain resignation

“Life is made of choices,” said former Minister Nelson Teich. “Today, I chose to leave.”

In his first address since resigning as Health Minister earlier today, Mr. Teich thanked his team’s support and praised healthcare workers. But he failed to explain the reasons for his resignation amid the worst pandemic in a century. And he failed to mention his public disagreements with President Jair Bolsonaro — notably, on whether or not controversial antimalarial drug chloroquine should be administered to all Covid-19 patients —, Mr. Teich thanked the president for the opportunity. “I did not accept the invitation due to the position. I accepted it because I thought I could help Brazil and its people,” he said.

Mr. Teich, whose stint in office lasted only 28 days, said his administration leaves a comprehensive plan to help states and municipalities to tackle Covid-19 as a legacy. “I leave a plan ready to help states and municipalities understand what is going on and how to plan the next steps.”

Brazil has nearly 14,000 confirmed deaths and almost 203,000 Covid-19 infections.
