Installed at the field hospital on the grounds of São Paulo’s Pacaembu football stadium, doctors, nurses, and nursing technicians from all around Brazil are helping the Covid-19 fight in the country’s biggest city.
Speaking to newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, one nurse — who came all the way from the Center-West state of Goiás — said it was as if she and her colleagues had been summoned to go to war. “How would we not go to the battlefield?” she said.
The Pacaembu field hospital has been functioning for over one month. As of last week, 80 percent of its beds were occupied by Covid-19 patients. The state of São Paulo has registered 46,131 cases of the virus, and 3,743 deaths — just under one-third of the national total.
