Bolsonaro to hold a barbecue with “30 or so guests”

As Brazil’s death toll from the Covid-19 pandemic nears 10,000 and the number of cases skyrockets (currently at 136,519), Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro told reporters he plans to “commit a crime” by hosting a barbecue for friends, cabinet members, and other public servants on Saturday.

In defiance of public health experts’ warnings, Mr. Bolsonaro claimed that they would grill some meat, talk shop, and play a little football. However, “there will be no alcohol” served. Attendees would have to chip in BRL 70 to cover the costs of the barbecue. Mr. Bolsonaro has made the flagrant violation of social isolation measures a weekend ritual over the course of the crisis, last weekend he breakfasted with supporters and addressed pro-government protestors.
