Coronavirus

As usual, Covid-19 numbers accelerate before the weekend

After surpassing 9,000 deaths on Thursday, new Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise in Brazil. The latest figures by the Health Ministry showed 10,222 new cases and 751 new deaths in the past 24 hours alone. Total cases now stand at 145,328 with 9,897 deaths. These figures are, however, much lower than the real numbers — as low testing is a problem in every state.

Since last Friday, Brazil has recorded 53,739 infections and 3,568 deaths. Today, Rio de Janeiro registered 189 deaths — topping São Paulo numbers for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.

At least four Brazilian states have 90 percent of their intensive care units occupied, and more than half of the country’s 26 states have already reached the 50-percent mark.
