Pará governor puts ten cities on lockdown

Ten cities in the northern state of Pará will enter lockdown tomorrow after a decree signed by Governor Helder Barbalho. The state administration chose municipalities based on their number of confirmed cases: all cities with infection rates 50 percent higher than the state average will be put on lockdown. Most of these cities are located in the metropolitan region of the state capital Belém.

This trend is in line with what has been seen on a national level: metropolitan areas, where millions of people live and commute into bustling city centers, have been the hotbeds of coronavirus in Brazil. The following chart shows data on infections and deaths in the Belém metro area.
