⚠️ UPDATE: For the first time, 10,000 new cases in one day

Brazil registered 10,381 new cases of Covid-19 — and 615 new deaths over the past 24 hours. This is the first time that the country has surpassed the 10,000 mark in terms of daily new infections. Brazil’s total figures are as follows:

  • 125,218 cases;
  • 8,536 deaths.

For the second time since Health Minister Nelson Teich took office three weeks ago, the department bungled the official stats. Initially, the ministry informed 6,472 cases in the South — updating moments later to 6,594. It also informed one fewer death. The ministry updated the figures — but did not warn about the mistake. At time of update, some websites, such as Yahoo! Brasil, still displayed outdated figures.

During a press conference today, Mr. Teich said that lockdowns may be required in some parts of the country, while the relaxation of social isolation may be possible in other locations. According to Mr. Teich, the best-case scenario would be for the country to carry out mass testing in order to avoid the need for more extreme measures.

“The important thing is that we will map [the outbreak]. You create a matrix, with new cases, infrastructure, progression, and see what regions are in [need of a lockdown]. It is not to be against or in favor [of social isolation], it is to choose what is right,” Mr. Teich told reporters.
