Rio de Janeiro, the city with the second-highest absolute number of Covid-19 cases in Brazil, has just opened a new field hospital at the Riocentro convention center. The unit has the capacity for 500 beds, of which 100 are for intensive care patients. Additionally, 15 beds are equipped with dialysis machines.
The field hospital is the biggest in the state of Rio de Janeiro, at 16,500 square meters in area. An initial investment of BRL 10 million was earmarked for construction and the hospital is set to receive more equipment by the end of the month when a new cargo should arrive from China. However, as reported by news website Poder360, the hospital will only work when the occupancy at the city’s Ronaldo Gazolla Hospital reaches 70 percent of its 381 beds.
