São Paulo to extend quarantine, says media

São Paulo Governor João Doria is set to extend quarantine measures in the state beyond April 22, according to a report by news website G1. The Brazilian state hardest-hit by Covid-19 is trying to increase social isolation levels ahead of the pandemic’s peak, expected to happen in May.

São Paulo adopted mandatory quarantine measures on March 24, but adherence levels are around 50 percent, below the 70 percent considered necessary by the government to reduce the spread of the virus. As things stand, the state is home to over 40 percent of all Covid-19 cases in Brazil and 853 of the 1,924 death toll as of April 16.

David Uip, coordinator of São Paulo’s Covid-19 Response Center, estimates that 1 percent of the state’s population is expected to be infected, which would add up to 450,000 people. Roughly 5 percent of them (22,500) will need intensive care beds.
