Covid-19 spreads to all Brazilian states

State health authorities in Brazil have updated the country’s Covid-19 numbers. Brazil’s northernmost state of Roraima has reported its first two infections, meaning that the novel coronavirus has reached all 27 of Brazil’s states. Here are the updated figures:

  • 1,201 infections;
  • 18 deaths (15 in São Paulo, three in Rio de Janeiro).

The first case of Covid-19 within a favela has also been reported. In Rio’s Cidade de Deus—the set for the eponymous 2002 film. During a press conference on Saturday, Health Ministry representatives said containing the novel coronavirus inside poor areas will be Brazil’s biggest challenge. These areas have huge population concentrations in small areas, and many families live in small breezeblock shacks—which makes self-isolation near impossible.

“It will be pivotal to work on alternatives to offer defense as soon the cases start to appear [in said areas],” said Mr. Wanderson Oliveira, Health Ministry secretary.
