The state administration of Pernambuco announced the removal of 237 passengers from cruise ship Silver Shadow—which has been quarantined since March 12 at a port in the state capital of Recife. Two Covid-19 cases were confirmed. Some 300 people remain aboard.
The operation started on Friday, when the first 205 passengers were removed. The last 22 were taken on Saturday morning, escorted to the airport and flown back to Canada. Passengers from Uruguay and Mexico were also flown home.
The case holds macabre similarities to the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which was quarantined for weeks near Japa and became a focal point of the initial outbreak. On February 4, there were ten confirmed cases—a number that grew to over 700 according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report of their initial investigation of Covid-19 cases among crew members aboard the Diamond Princess:
Infection had apparently spread among persons whose cabins were on the same deck (deck 3) and who worked in the same occupational group (food service), probably through contact or droplet spread, which is consistent with the current understanding of COVID-19 transmission.
