President Jair Bolsonaro has vetoed a section of a bill that would have barred airlines from charging passengers for their first piece of checked luggage.
The bill, which adjusts airline regulations, was approved in Congress in May, including a provision giving passengers the right to a piece of checked luggage of up to 23 kilos on domestic flights, and 30 kilos on international flights. President Bolsonaro signed the bill into law late on Tuesday but vetoed the segment regarding free checked luggage.
“The proposal goes against public interest, considering that, in practice, it would increase the cost of aviation services and regulatory risks, which would reduce the attractivity of the Brazilian market to potential new competitors and contribute to increasing the costs of airline tickets,” President Bolsonaro wrote in his justification for the veto.
The veto had been widely expected, amid criticism from the air travel sector and concerns over higher costs. The price of airline tickets in Brazil has already surged 89 percent in the 12 months to May.
