Senate President to meet with military court chief

A day after meeting with Supreme Court Chief Justice Luiz Fux, Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco will on Wednesday sit with General Luis Carlos Gomes Mattos, chief justice at the Superior Military Court. The meeting is not mentioned on Mr. Pacheco’s official schedule, but it was confirmed by the military court and should take place at the senator’s home.

Yesterday, Justice Fux hosted a meeting with Defense Minister General Paulo Sérgio Nogueira aimed at reducing the tensions between the Judiciary and the barracks. Tensions were reignited last week after Justice Luís Roberto Barroso said the Armed Forces have been used by President Jair Bolsonaro as a proxy to attack the country’s voting system.

At the president’s behest, the Army has raised multiple questions about the reliability of Brazil’s electronic voting machines (which have never been at the center of credible fraud allegations). Still, the defense minister assured the chief justice yesterday that the military will respect its constitutional duties during the election.
