The immediate impact of higher fuel prices

After government-controlled oil company Petrobras announced a major hike to fuel prices last week, transport around Brazil is already becoming more and more expensive. Beyond the rise in fuel costs at the pump, ride-hailing app Uber said it would increase fares by 6.5 percent, while popular taxi app 99 will bump up its per kilometer rates by 5 percent.

The impact won’t just be felt on the ground, either. Brazilian airline association Abear said the fuel spike will cause flights to become scarcer and airfares to get more expensive. Abear noted that regional routes will become unfeasible for carriers, which should further increase Brazil’s dependence on highways.
