Court nullifies Federal Police operation against Ciro Gomes

A panel of federal judges unanimously decided to nullify a search and seizure operation targeting presidential hopeful Ciro Gomes.

In mid-December, the Federal Police accused Mr. Gomes and his brother, Senator Cid Gomes, of being part of a “criminal organization” that rigged public procurement processes for the renovation of a football stadium used in the 2014 World Cup, in exchange for bribes. The crimes allegedly took place between 2010 and 2013.

Judges sided with the Gomes brothers’ defense, which claimed the operation could not have taken place so many years after the alleged crimes happened. Investigations, however, will continue — the court said.

On the day the raid happened, Ciro Gomes used his Twitter account to call it an “aberration” and accused President Jair Bolsonaro of using the Feds to target his political adversaries ahead of the election.
