The São Paulo-based Butantan Biological Institute confirmed the availability of 10 million Sinovac vaccine doses requested by the Brazilian Health Ministry. Two weeks ago, regulators greenlit the immunizer’s emergency use on minors aged 6 to 17.
Butantan said the 10 million doses could be “delivered immediately,” adding that an additional shipment of 20 million doses can be provided 20 to 25 days after the vaccine purchase contract is signed.
Sinovac shots have been used for children predominantly in São Paulo — the state which inked the deal to produce the vaccine domestically back in 2020. Meanwhile, children in the rest of the country rely on modified Pfizer doses, the first immunizer approved for use in people aged 5 to 11.
