With vice-presidency in sight, Alckmin moves to join Socialist Party

Former São Paulo Governor Geraldo Alckmin has decided to officially join the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), with his affiliation ceremony set to take place next week. The information was confirmed by PSB chair Carlos Siqueira.

Mr. Alckmin is being courted as former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s running mate for the October election, and the act of joining the PSB suggests the alliance is close to becoming a reality. Lula’s Workers’ Party is in talks with the PSB to set up a federation, a formal bond uniting both groups in Congress, state legislatures, state governments, and city councils for the next four years. 

Negotiations stalled in recent weeks, with the PSB’s Márcio França reluctant to give up his candidacy for the São Paulo state government. Lula wants former São Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad to run instead.
