São Paulo has vaccinated entire adult population

Health officials in São Paulo, Brazil’s most populous state, said on Monday that every adult living in the state has received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine. According to official data, that corresponds to over 35.3 million people.

“São Paulo leads all states in full immunization rates, too,” the state government said in a statement. “As of Monday, 70.4 million total doses have been administered.”

Roughly 3,400 Covid patients remain hospitalized in the state of São Paulo and 1,600 are in intensive care. The number is almost nine times less than in Q1 2021, when Brazil experienced a brutal second wave of infections. At that point, more than 31,000 people were hospitalized due to the infection and the health network was pushed to the cusp of collapse.

ICU occupancy rates are now at just 27.3 percent statewide and 36.4 percent in Greater São Paulo.
