Bolsonaro’s new aid scheme to leave up to 20 million unassisted

About 20 million people who received coronavirus emergency aid payments but who are not eligible for cash-transfer program Bolsa Família will be left out of Auxílio Brasil — President Bolsonaro’s new wealth transfer scheme to be launched in November.

Citizenship Minister João Roma was adamant in stating that the emergency aid program will expire at the end of the month, leaving those not poor enough to qualify for Bolsa Família stipends without benefits.

Most of those who will fall through the cracks are informal workers. Citizenship Ministry officials say that some of these 20 million workers could eventually join Bolsa Família, as the government intends on clearing the program’s waiting list of 1.5 million families.
