Sputnik V approved for emergency use in Chile

Chilean health regulator Instituto de Salud Pública (ISP) approved the Russian-made Sputnik V vaccine for emergency use, bringing the total number of vaccines authorized in the South American country to six.

The Russian vaccine’s two shots will be applied to adults only, over an interval of 21 days, after which efficacy is expected to top 91 percent. Sputnik V is already being used in several Latin American countries, such as Argentina and Bolivia

Chile’s vaccination campaign is currently among the fastest in the world, with 85 percent of the eligible population already vaccinated with at least one dose. On July 20, the country reported its smallest number of new infections since November 2020, with only 902 cases.

The Health Ministry is now vaccinating teenagers and discussing the potential need to administer booster shots to citizens immunized with two doses.
