The Guatemalan government is threatening to pursue a refund for payments it made in a deal for 16 million doses of Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine. Health Minister Amélia Flores said the country will demand its USD 79.6 million be returned unless at least half of the purchased vaccines arrive by July 20.
Despite fulfilling its contract payments, Guatemala has received only 150,000 Sputnik V doses spread over three different shipments. Local officials in the Central American nation already plan to negotiate with other manufacturers to speed up its vaccine rollout. As of July, only 1 percent of the country’s 18 million inhabitants have been fully vaccinated, one of the lowest rates in Latin America.
