Mexico: young people more affected by third wave of infections

Already forecasting a new peak in Covid-19 figures for August, the government in Mexico said on Tuesday that young people have been the most affected share of the population in recent weeks. Currently, the average age of coronavirus patients is 38 years old, the lowest since the beginning of the pandemic. 

At the same time, Mexico’s coronavirus task force chief Hugo López-Gatell said the number of deaths is not keeping up the pace with total infections, which health officials say is an effect of increased vaccination levels. Mr. López-Gatell said over 97 percent of people currently hospitalized for Covid-19 are not vaccinated. 

Mexico reports a total of more than 2.6 million confirmed cases and 237,000 deaths. Over 17.2 percent of the country’s 126 million people have been twice vaccinated.
