According to data supplied by São Paulo’s Municipal Funeral Service to newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, the city saw a 20.5-percent increase in the number of burials at public cemeteries, mainly due to Covid-19 deaths. The rise comes in relation to the first five months of 2020.
Between January and May of last year, 32,657 people were buried in public cemeteries in Brazil’s biggest city — over 8,100 fewer than the same period in 2021. São Paulo buried 9,885 people in the month of March alone.
An average of 260 were buried in São Paulo every day during the first five months of this year.
