Covid-19 infections rise 24.5 percent in Colombia

The number of Covid-19 cases in Colombia surpassed 187,000 between May 31 and June 6, a near 25-percent increase in comparison to the previous week. Colombia has now breached the mark of 3.5 million cases, showing that the pandemic remains out of control 15 months after its first case.

The increase in infections was accompanied by a 3.4-percent rise in deaths. In the week ending on June 6, 3,558 Colombians lost their lives due to Covid-19, bringing the total tally of casualties to 91,000. The epicenter and capital city Bogotá saw its health system collapse due to overwhelming demand.

Colombia is one of the worst-affected countries in Latin America and vaccination is far from being fast enough to curb the spread of the virus, with only 11.6 million jabs applied so far. The campaign received reinforcement on June 6, with the arrival of 1 million Sinovac vaccines.
