Supreme Court asks prosecutors to weigh in on Bolsonaro genocide complaint

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Rosa Weber ordered the country’s Federal Prosecution Service to analyze whether President Jair Bolsonaro committed the crimes of genocide and charlatanism, among others, during the pandemic.

The ruling has no immediate effect on Mr. Bolsonaro, as the prosecutor general is likely to ignore the charges. Still, it shows the level of belligerence between the president’s office and the Supreme Court — as the justice could have easily dismissed the request.
