Brazil’s federally-run Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) cut the number of AstraZeneca vaccine doses it expects to deliver to the Health Ministry by the end of the year 2021, from 110 to 100 million.
The Fiocruz downplayed the cut, saying the 100 million doses originally purchased by the government will not be impacted. “We are working with a very unknown process and getting new information as time goes on,” said the institute.
Brazil greenlit the mass production of AstraZeneca vaccines in March and currently relies on the import of active pharmaceutical ingredients — shipments of which have been held up in Chinese and Indian customs.
Earlier this week, Brazil signed a technology transfer deal of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which will allow Fiocruz to produce the Covid-19 immunizer from scratch.
