E-commerce skyrockets in Brazil during the pandemic

Over the last 12 months, 91 percent of Brazilians made at least one online purchase. This is a 5-percentage point increase compared to 2019, according to a survey carried out by the National Confederation of Shopkeepers (CNDL) and credit reporting agency SPC Brasil.

First published by news website G1, the report shows that food delivery and online grocery shopping were the best performers. The former almost doubled its figures, with 54.8 percent of respondents placing at least one order in the last year, compared to 30.4 percent in 2019. For online grocery shopping, the rate jumped from 9 percent to 30 percent.

The e-commerce sector now expects this growth to translate into revenue. In the first quarter of 2021, online sales saw a 72.2-percent increase compared to the same period of last year, with a total of BRL 35.2 billion.
