Brazil’s e-commerce boom boosts regionalization
It comes as no surprise that pandemic-related restrictions drove consumers to online shopping in 2020. An Ebit Nielsen study shows that e-commerce grew 41 percent last year, with the sector worth a total of BRL 87.4 billion (USD 15.5 billion). Here are some important findings:
- Almost 80 million Brazilians (38 percent of the population) bought something online last year. Among roughly 13 million first-time buyers, 83 percent intended to purchase goods online again.
- More than half of e-commerce sales (55 percent) were made via mobile devices.
- Brazil’s richest and most populous Southeast region accounted for 52 percent of all e-commerce sales. But the poorer Northeast almost doubled its share of the pie, increasing from 18 to 32 percent of purchases. For Ebit Nielsen consultants, that highlights the rapid process of regionalization in Brazilian e-commerce.
