Brazil close to deal for 100 million extra Pfizer vaccines

During an event held by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), Brazilian Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said the government is close to signing a new contract with Pfizer for 100 million doses of its coronavirus vaccine — adding to the 100 million shots already purchased.

“Brazil will have at 200 million Pfizer doses at its disposal,” said Mr. Queiroga. “That amounts to immunizing half of the population in 2021, as this new contract foresees 35 million doses [being delivered] by October.”

Mr. Queiroga added that it is a “miracle” that Brazil has secured so many doses in such little time, using January of this year as his baseline. However, he failed to mention that, prior to his stint in the cabinet, the government had refused to buy 70 million vaccine doses from Pfizer offered in August 2020.
