The government of El Salvador decided to include journalists and press workers among the Covid-19 vaccine priority groups, as the country speeds up its immunization rollout, distributing 600,000 jabs so far.
President Nayib Bukele tweeted that the communication sector will be included in the vaccination as “second-line personnel,” as many of them “cover the pandemic within hospitals.” The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas says more than 500 journalists have died from Covid-19 to date — with Peru and Brazil leading the ranking.
Salvadoran sources consulted by The Brazilian Report believe Mr. Bukele is gesturing toward the press to cool tensions after a face-off in 2020, when his administration was accused of violating freedom of speech laws.
