Yet another South American country has imposed restrictions on travelers arriving from Brazil. After Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Colombia, Ecuador has now imposed a ten-day quarantine on all arrivals from Brazil, housing them within government-approved facilities.
The decision comes after authorities in capital city Quito canceled a continental football match Brazilian side Grêmio and Ecuadorian team Independiente del Valle. The game was scheduled to take place this evening, but it was postponed after two Grêmio players tested positive for the coronavirus.
“Citizens’ health is above any football match,” declared Ecuadorian Government Minister Gabriel Martínez. South American football confederation Conmebol decided to move the game to Paraguayan capital Asunción — where healthcare networks are already teetering close to collapse.
Brazilian clubs are forbidden from entering most South American nations, as governments see delegations as potential spreaders.
