A 10-year-old rape victim reignited Brazil’s public debate on abortion this week. Abortion is only legal in Brazil in 4 situations: rape, incest, when the mother’s life is in danger or in cases of anencephaly. But doctors in the girl’s home state of Espírito Santo refused to do the procedure, forcing the child’s family to take her 1,800 km from home to a hospital that would fulfill her right. Meanwhile, Human Rights Minister Damares Alves — an evangelical and anti-abortion activist – spearheaded an opinion campaign to dissuade the girl from terminating her pregnancy. ___ The Brazilian Report is an independent media outlet uniquely positioned to offer an insider’s view on current affairs in Brazil.
