Brazil: reopening WITHOUT a drop in the Covid-19 curve – TBR Weekly #8

Without a drop in the coronavirus curve, and relaxing social isolation, Brazil is seen as a testing ground for vaccines. On June 4, the country reached a new record of 1,473 deaths in 24h. That’s one new Covid-19 death every minute. ⠀ The Southeast region — home to 42 percent of the Brazilian population — leads the country with 15,000-plus deaths. If the four states of the region (São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and Espírito Santo) were a country of their own, it would have the seventh-highest number of deaths in the world — more than Mexico, Belgium, or Germany. ⠀ During a White House press conference, President Donald Trump remarked that if the U.S. had taken the same approach to Covid-19 than Brazil, his country could have “lost a million, a million and a half, maybe even 2.5 million or more lives.” ⠀ —- The Brazilian Report is an independent media outlet uniquely positioned to offer an insider’s view on current affairs in Brazil.
