Brazilians accuse Twitter of harboring fake news spreaders

Prosecutors have stepped in, demanding the platform explain why it has not set up tools to contain pandemic-related misinformation

Hashtags accusing Twitter of supporting fake news or being negligent against misinformation are among Brazil’s trending topics, with roughly 90,000 posts on Thursday. 

Health experts, journalists, and multiple organizations in Brazil have called out the platform for its laissez-faire stance on disinformation by Portuguese-speaking accounts, as it does not provide an option to report tweets specifically for containing false information — and grants verification seals to accounts known for spreading fake news.
